Thanks to a great offer from Office Depot and American Express, I saved $20 off $100 in Amazon gift cards this morning!

How I saved $20 off $100 in Amazon gift cards at Office Depot!

Amex and Office Depot (still operating as “Office Max” in some areas) have teamed up for a great offer: spend $50 and receive a $10 Amex statement credit.

Amex Office Depot Offer: Receive a $10 credit when spending $50.

The offer is good in person or online. (Remember to first click through from a shopping portal and receive another rebate!)

Five of my Amex cards (the Enhanced Business Platinum, Business Gold Rewards, SPG Business, Delta Platinum for Business, and Delta Reserve for Business) were targeted. I added the offer to each card and went shopping!

Remember to add the Amex Offers to your cards before you shop! You can’t receive the benefits unless you add benefit to your card!

Buying Amazon Gift Cards

Office Depot offers a variety of gift cards: Visa and MasterCard debit gift cards, Groupon, Toys“R”Us, American Eagle, Fandango, and many others. I bought two $50 Amazon gift cards because 1) one is a gift for someone who — like many of us — loves Amazon and 2) I needed one for myself! (Fellow new parents, FYI: Amazon has some pretty great deals on diapers. Guess where my $50 is going? ;-))

Plus, Visa and MasterCard gift cards come with $5.95 or $6.95 fees (depending on how much money you put on the card). For example, a $50 gift card would really end up costing $55.95. A transaction can be paid for with multiple credit cards, though. So really, I could’ve bought a $500 Visa gift card for $506.95, split it between my five eligible cards and brought the total to $456.95.

I needed something quick — and the $50 fee-free Amazon gift cards were the perfect solution.

I paid for the gift cards and received the always-welcome emails that I redeemed my Amex Offers:

Amex Offers = “Ultimate Cost”

Amex Offers don’t usually provide instant discounts or rebates, although I’ve seen a few exceptions (a recent Shari’s Berries deal linked through Amex saved us some money at checkout).

You pay the full amount upfront and credit is applied to your account, usually within a few days. In the below example, I redeemed an Amex Offer for HSN: spend $50, receive $10 credit. You’ll see I spent the full $50 on April 14; my Amex account was credited $10 the following day.

Amex HSN offer: spend $50, receive $10 credit.

What’s especially great about this set up is you receive full shopping portal cash back or points because, again, you’re charged the full amount up front. Shopping portals and Amex Offers are independent of each other!

Moral of the story: don’t get worried when you’re charged full price for something falling under an Amex Offer. Don’t yell and scream at the cashier because you didn’t receive a discount. They probably won’t know about any Amex Offers!

Were You Targeted? What Will You Buy?

Were any of your cards targeted for the Office Depot Amex offer? What will you buy: gift certificates, office supplies or home goods Office Depot sells? Tell us below!
