Pulled! Office Depot Gift Card Sale Canceled?!

Office Depot pulled their gift card sale — more than a week early.

Well. That was fast. It appears the Office Depot gift card sale was canceled this morning — five days after it started and more than a week before it’s published expiration date.

I visited an Office Depot store about an hour ago and purchased a $100 MasterCard gift card. (My old buddy Dwight Shrute — whom I mentioned yesterday — was my cashier, lucky me.) The instant rebate didn’t appear on my receipt. I asked Sir Shrute why the discount didn’t kick in. His response: “No rebate on gift cards.” I pointed to the promotion’s display. He suddenly changed his story. “Oh. You have to buy two $50 gift cards,” he said. “You bought a $100 gift card.”

What’s interesting about his second explanation is the deal is was trigged by one transaction totaling $50, even if you combined eligible gift cards. (Office Depot, though, apparently loves spinning whacky stories. Read about Sean Coomer‘s experiences on his excellent Miles to Memories blog.)

I called a friend (who is pretty much the Obi-Wan Kenobi of gift cards); he told me Office Depot canceled the gift card sale this morning. Mr. Coomer’s post also unofficially confirms the deal is done-zo.

RIP, Office Max gift card sale.
