That’s Not a Fountain! Woman Tosses Coins into Jet Engine for “Good Luck”

Written by on June 28, 2017 in Travel News

A woman in Shanghai intentionally tossed coins into a China Southern Airlines jet engine (yes, really) in hopes it would bring “good luck.”

Guess what?

It brought, y’know, bad luck.

Tamar Lapin writes via the NY Post and Fox News that an 80-year-old woman named Qiu  paused on the tarmac while boarding her flight. She made a “blessings” offering and tossed nine coins into one of the jet engine’s turbines.

Ms. Lapin reports Qiu’s gesture — in the name of “good luck” — “prompted concerned passengers to alert airline staff, who conducted a full examination of the engine and evacuated 150 passengers.”  She also says one of the coins actually landed in the engine. That could’ve caused damage had the engine been turned on.

After a five-hour delay, the flight to Guangzhou apparently departed safely.
